Basic Website Optimisation Tips

So youʼve learnt all there is to know about building your website from the ground up and the importance of dedicated servers for big internet players. But what about all this talk of website optimisation? The fact is that schools of thought on how to successfully optimise your website are constantly changing but there are a few things that remain constant. Weʼve listed them here:

Get to know how people are searching for websites like yours

Using Googleʼs free online keyword tool you are able to search for the keywords that are being used to find services and products like yours, using search engines. This is the first and most important step in building a high quality optimised website so take your time, test out keywords, and test a number of long and short keyword phrases in a search engine like Google and see who comes up. You should see a few competitors right up there. This is a good indication that perhaps the search term you have just used is one that is valuable to you.

Quality Content

While keywords are extremely important, one of the main things to remember is to keep your content relevant, easy to read and not too keyword heavy. Of course though, you should select a number of keywords to be used in each new post/web page. By heavily bombarding your content with keywords Google might even penalize you, so be aware of this.

Itʼs also a good idea to constantly update your content. Websites that are static for long periods of time are not seen favourably by Google however websites that constantly have new content and are updated regularly are given priority.

Internal links

Creating relevant links from one page to the other on your website is a great way to help boost your ranking and optimise your website without having to begin with your external link building.

From the ground up

From domain names to the structure of your site the optimisation needs to begin right from the early stages. Make sure that the developer you are working with knows the best practices for building a highly optimised site. This will make a big difference in the future. This includes things like using keywords and key phrases in your HTML title tag.

Domain names

Choosing the right domain name is another important thing to consider when you want to build a website that is able to generate lots of traffic. The name of your business should be relevant. Consider branding, rank in the search engines and the linkability. Using a keyword in your domain name will not only give people an idea immediately of what you offer, but it also helps with the search engine optimisation of your site, not to mention branding in your chosen industry.

Search engine optimisation practices are constantly changing as the world wide web itself changes. But as long as you know some of the basic optimisation tips and implement them effectively, you will be on your way to increasing your web ranking in no time.

TiVo App for Android and iPhone Coming Soon

It has been a long time coming but it appears that TiVo might finally be ready to roll out software for the iPhone and Android.

While TiVo hasn’t confirmed anything just yet, ZatzNotFunny discovered some details in the June issue of CEPro which reveals TiVo’s plans to release apps for both operating systems in the near future:

One of the biggest trends to sweep through the consumer electronics industry is the adoption of software delivered through Apple’s iTunes App Store. For TiVo owners, the California-based company developed control and management apps for the iPad and (soon) the iPhone and Android OS products. Williams says that TiVo approached the development of its control apps with the goal of making it easy for users to maximize the power of its products and extend the TiVo experience to a “second screen.”

As you might know, TiVo does in fact have an application for the iPad but nothing out yet for Android and iPhone users. That however will be a thing of the past in the near future if this little tidbit speaks the truth.

It’s also unclear as to whether or not the software will come to both Android smartphones and tablets or if the company will start with one and then release it for the other later on like it did with the iPad and iPhone.

Either way, TiVo owners with iPhones and Android should be on the look out for an official announcement.

Nokia finally announces its N9 MeeGo phone, but what is it trying to accomplish?

We’re still months away from Nokia’s first official Windows Phone 7 device, but the company had another phone up its sleeve to introduce tonight at its Nokia Connection event in Singapore: the N9, its long-rumored MeeGo-powered smartphone.

The mockups of the N9 are indeed gorgeous (check out the video demo below), but I’m finding it difficult to work up excitement for the device when it’s clearly a side project for Nokia. The company’s main goal now is to deliver flagship Windows Phone 7 devices — not to pretend as if a MeeGo phone is anything but a curiosity today. And I don’t suspect that the N9 will attract many third-party developers, as beautiful as it is.

As a sequel to last year’s N8, which had some great hardware that was shackled by Nokia’s aging Symbian OS, the N9 appears to be a success on paper. It sports a 3.9-inch curved glass AMOLED display that leaves little room for anything else on the front. There’s no home button to speak off (the phone is unlocked by a double-tap). The N9′s case is made from a polycarbonate material that Nokia says will have better antenna performance than some competitor’s designs. The phone sports a unibody design that sits somewhere between Nokia’s design for the N8 and an Apple device.

Nokia has included a powerful 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics (natch), which is capable of recording HD video. The N9 also has NFC capabilities, which makes it suited for mobile payments and communication between NFC-enabled accessories (like Bluetooth headsets). Nokia also saw fit to include a revamped Maps applications that includes free in-car navigation, and the N9 is also the first phone to support Dolby Digital Plus.

The images and video Nokia has released of the N9 are clearly mockups, but from the looks of it the phone’s MeeGo interface resembles a cross between Android and WebOS. The phone sports three home screens arranged in a carousel, including a typical screen full of icons for apps, a multitasking screen for switching between open apps, and a screen dedicated to social networking alerts and other notifications. There’s also a Webkit browser with wide HTML5 support. The N9′s software definitely seems more polished than any previous version of MeeGo that I’ve seen, but again it’s important to note that we’re not looking at actual hardware yet.

In the end, the N9 just seems like a mark of pride for Nokia. As gorgeous as it is, I have a hard time believing that developers would pay much attention to the phone when there’s no guarantee that Nokia (or other manufacturers) will ever deliver another MeeGo device. In fact, Nokia previously said that it’s approaching the N9 as a sort of experiment. Intel, Nokia’s partner in crime for MeeGo, hasn’t had much success convincing developers to bring apps to MeeGo netbooks and tablets either.

Indeed, it seems more prudent for developers to pay closer attention to Nokia’s work with Windows Phone 7. With Nokia’s support, that platform could end up being somewhat competitive against the iPhone and Android. But unfortunately for MeeGo, all seems lost.

Thus, these Web-friendly applications, which Microsoft calls 'custom applications' were built on a new development platform Windows 8 and are based largely on Internet Explorer 10, which will launch with the new operating system and also in HTML 5, Javascript and CSS.

'These languages are the backbone of the Web, so as soon as we release Windows 8, hundreds of millions of developers know how to build Windows applications 8', explains Michael Angiulo, corporate vice president of Windows '

Windows interface 8 may be controlled using gestures on touch screen devices. From within an application, passing a finger through it from the right, there is a Windows control panel, which includes a Home button to return to the Welcome screen. From there, it will open new applications.

If you slide your finger from the left, users can switch between applications that are already open. And if you drag a finger from bottom to top of the screen, open the control menu for each application.

In the demo, the interfaces listed in multiple prototype devices Angiulo seemed to work smoothly and quickly moved between applications and menus.

Windows 8 also introduces a new level of multitasking. When playing a video, the user opens another application, the video continues to play audio in the background. A feature called Snap creates a new screen with an application running on each side.

Windows Explorer and the Windows desktop will still be available from Microsoft explained that the operating system will be compatible with existing applications and peripherals for Windows 7.

Even so, developers will have to learn many more things and Microsoft has announced the launch of a new conference, Build, to be held in Anaheim, California, September. In it, developers will learn how to program for the new operating system. 'Space is limited and registration is now open from now on.'

Microsoft also said that Windows 8 - which apparently is still his code name, work on ARM-based processors such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, as well as the x86 Intel and AMD, as at present. ARM processors are used in most smartphones and tablets on the market.

Adobe Connect 8 Backgrounds

In Adobe Connect 8, we introduced a new aspect ratio that allows for optimum viewing. The Adobe Connect meeting interface rescales intelligently to provide optimum viewing experiences for any screen size or resolution.

We’ve received great feedback on this change that enables the product to scale but maintain aspect ratio. At the same time, users who created customized wallpapers for Adobe Connect 7.5 or earlier may have noticed them stretching the original branded appearance. With that in mind, I wanted to share some tips for those who like the ability to customize and brand their Adobe Connect meetings (and also point you to some of our own backgrounds…but more on that later):

- Background file types supported are: JPG, PNG, GIF and SWF.

- The name of the background file should be 50 characters or less.

- The background scales with the size of the meeting client window. Different client views are determined by screen resolution.

- Aspect ratio is always honored, which means the largest dimension dominates so there is never a blank space. Keep in mind, this is what can cause an image to truncate.

- You can use Adobe Illustrator to create a vector-based wallpaper image that scales beautifully at any size. You should save for web and choose SWF as the format. SWF backgrounds are very lightweight but the trick is getting the aspect ratio correct – again, Adobe Connect 8 meetings are no longer of a fixed ratio and, as a result, it may take some tweaking as you go.

- Use a higher resolution when creating pixel-based wallpaper images in Photoshop. You’ll typically achieve better results scaling down than scaling up. We recommend using 1920×1200, which works well – note this means it will scale down on monitors with lower resolutions and scale up on 27″+ monitors. (Bear in mind bitmaps are not supported).

- It’s best to keep the background file size small. The size of the background file impacts required bandwidth and attendees will download this file as part of joining the meeting.

- As a best practice, in large meetings of over 300 participants, hosts should consider removing backgrounds, which saves bandwidth usage and results in a better participant experience for those on slower connections or older computers.

- Adobe Connect 8 offers a larger viewing area so it’s also quite simple to add an additional share pod where you can upload a simple .PPTX with your preferred branding. This looks great, for example, in the upper right-hand corner of an Adobe Connect meeting room. (See image below)

As I alluded earlier, we’ve created some nice Adobe Connect backgrounds ourselves that you can download from the ConnectUsers.com site here and place in your Adobe Connect room (to download, click on the gallery thumbnail image of interest, then right-click on the large image and choose “Save Image As…” from your browser). Backgrounds in Adobe Connect are associated with a particular room only to allow multiple users within an account to brand as they wish.

To change the default background in an Adobe Connect meeting, as a host, go to the top menu.

1. Choose Meeting > Preferences.

2. Click upload, then navigate to the desired image. If you haven’t previously added the file to Adobe Connect, click Browse My Computer.

It is important when creating a background to note there is a way to anchor your background to one of the four corners. The default anchor point is the bottom left corner.

For example, if you want to fit a square image in a 4:3 Adobe Connect meeting room window like the sample below, choose a background where you place the logo in the bottom left corner.

Since the anchor default is the bottom left corner, you can see the image fits nicely.

If you find your image is being cropped on the top or side, you can change the anchor point to the corner that best suits your background image. To change the anchor point, in your Adobe Connect Meeting room, go to Meeting > Preferences and you will see a box that looks like the image below. Double click on the preview image (see red rectangle in image below). This will change the anchor point. Watch your image closely after double clicking and you will see the adjustments to the background in the window. Please note anchor points can be similarly changed for SWF files used as background images, however note the preview image is not updated in the preview window.

I hope you’ll find this post helpful and of interest, and that you’ll check out and enjoy the backgrounds I discussed. As always, let us know your thoughts in comments and on Twitter @AdobeConnect and @ConnectSupport.

Adobe Flash Player 4.5 Integration with SAP NetWeaver Gateway

One of the important factors for organisations trying to improve their business processes and user experience is the need to access applications across multiple devices. In particular the need to enable fully functioning business apps on mobile devices.

Adobe is making great strides in developing its technologies and partnerships to make this a reality. Last week Adobe announced new plans for further integration with SAP – one of the world’s largest providers of enterprise business solutions. The integration – between the SAP NetWeaver Gateway technology and Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 – will enable the development of rich mobile and Web applications for the enterprise that harness the functionality and power of SAP applications.

This new integration will allow developers to improve front-end experiences and extend SAP business and consumer processes, providing enterprise customers instant reach to critical business data across a broad range of devices and platforms, including Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS.

If you’re interested in learning more about this announcement take a look at the video below from Adobe’s CEO Shantanu Narayen, plus check out Adobe TV for a design demonstration.

Now, access Facebook without internet

Singapore-based software applications developer U2opia Mobile has developed a new application for mobile phones that will allow them to access Facebook on all kind of handsets without paying for a data connection.

'We are using USSD technology, which will enable users to access Facebook without having a GPRS connection on their phones,' said Sumesh Menon, the co-founder and CEO of U2Opia Mobile.

Unstructured Supplementary Data (USSD) is the technology used by telecom players to send alerts to their users that inform them about their balance at the end of call or for sending miss call alerts.

Menon mentioned that though the technology will not provide access to graphics, it will help users send and view updates on their friends' Facebook walls.

'It is like SMS and hence, the load on the network is negligible. We have built some commands through which a user can receive alerts on activity happening on his wall as well post an update,' said Menon.

U2opia launched this application with Indian telecom major Bharti Airtel. While Airtel customers can update their Facebook status through this USSD service free of cost, Rs 1 per day will be applicable for accessing the full-feature application, which enables viewing news feeds, commenting on or liking news feed stories, posting on friends' walls, confirming friend requests, viewing notifications and finding as well as adding friends.

'In the Indian market scenario, where the penetration of smartphones is relatively low and the use of internet on mobiles is primarily limited to key cities, many users are excluded from accessing their Facebook accounts via mobile phones,' said Shireesh Joshi, Bharti Airtel Director -- Marketing, Mobile Services, in a statement.

Airtel users can dial *325# and *fbk# for non-Qwerty mobile handsets to access Facebook without subscribing to data plans, the statement said.

'We look forward to bringing millions of Facebook users in India closer to their love for social networking by allowing them to access it anytime, anywhere on their Airtel-powered mobile phones,'

Facebook admits hiring PR firm to smear Google

It seems like the ongoing rivalry between Facebook and Google has taken a turn for the subversive. Last night, a spokesman for the social network confirmed to the Daily Beast that Facebook paid a top PR firm to spread anti-Google stories across the media and to encourage various outlets to examine allegations that the Mountain View company was violating user privacy. The PR firm, Burson-Marsteller, even offered to help blogger Chris Soghoian write a critical op-ed piece about Social Circle -- a service that allows Gmail users to access information on so-called 'secondary connections,' or friends of their friends. Social Circle, in fact, seems to have been at the epicenter of Facebook's smear campaign. In a pitch to journalists, Burson described the tool in borderline apocalyptic terms:

'The American people must be made aware of the now immediate intrusions into their deeply personal lives Google is cataloging and broadcasting every minute of every day-without their permission.'

Soghoian thought that Burson's representatives were 'making a mountain out of a molehill,' so he decided to prod them about which company they might be working for. When Burson refused to spill the beans, Soghoian went public and published all of the e-mails sent between him and the firm. USA Today picked up on the story, before concluding that any claims of a smear campaign were unfounded. The Daily Beast's Dan Lyons, however, apparently forced Facebook's hand after confronting the company with 'evidence' of its involvement. A Facebook spokesman said the social network hired Burson to do its Nixonian dirty work for two primary reasons: it genuinely believes that Google is violating consumer privacy and it also suspects that its rival 'may be improperly using data they have scraped about Facebook users.' In other words, their actions were motivated by both 'altruistic' and self-serving agendas, though we'd be willing to bet that the latter slightly outweighed the former. Google, meanwhile, has yet to comment on the story, saying that it still needs more time to wrap its head around everything -- which might just be the most appropriate 'no comment' we've ever heard.
